As I grew up in the 1980s, all I had was a very
cheap mono FM radio which was incredibly prone to
interference. It was through this radio in 1981,
when I was 11 years old, that I learned of this
song, and not being a native English speaker, I
had at that young age no way of knowing what the
real lyrics were.
Fast forward to about five years ago: Whilst I
was on a nostalgia trip I played an 80s playlist
on Youtube, and one of the songs was Stand and
Deliver with the lyrics on screen. Only then did
I learn how wrong my interpretation of the lyrics
were, after years of singing it wrong.

Somehow the misheard lyric got mangled. The actual misheard lyric is "Stand in the river, the holly-holly who, lloyd".
